Group Director, Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Babak Shotorban is Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He has a broad research interest in developing and using mathematical, computational, and stochastic approaches to describe multiphysics and multiphase phenomena involving fluids or plasmas. He has been a PI or Co-PI on many projects supported by various federal agencies such as NSF, DOD, USDA, JFSP and NIST. His recent projects have been on stochastic fluctuations of grain charging in dusty plasmas, pyrolysis of living fuels in wildfires, merging of neighboring flames, and spread of wildland-urban interface fires by embers (aka firebrands). He received a PhD from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2005 and then conducted postdoctoral research with the Center for Simulation of Advanced Rockets at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign until 2007. Before joining UAH in 2008, he was a CFD software development engineer at the ESI-Group. He was the recipient of the University Distinguished Research Award in 2018. He is Associate Fellow of The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
Dean of College of Engineering
Shankar Mahalingam is Dean of the College of Engineering and Distinguished Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. From 1989 to 2000, he was Assistant and then Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder. From 2000 to 2010, he was Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Riverside, and served as Department Chair during six of those ten years. He received his B.Tech., graduating with distinction, from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (1980), MS from the State University of New York at Stony Brook (1982), and PhD from Stanford University (1989), all in Mechanical Engineering.
